About

What is Mian Sanon?

Mian Sanon is a social network to connect you and your family to your healthcare providers. You can create a customized profile according to your health condition, and securely share your record with all of your providers.

All of your family members can create their own customized profiles and share it with their doctors and every member of their healthcare team.

Your healthcare providers can also add information they record during your medical visits and share it with you. You can then share it with any other providers that you wish.

Mian Sanon means “My Health” in Esperanto, an artificial language that was created in the late 19th century to be an easy-to-learn, politically neutral language that would transcend nationality and foster international understanding between people with different languages.

We chose the name “Mian Sanon” for our product because the underlying technology turns the dream of a “common language” for healthcare information sharing into reality. This innovation puts you in control of your entire health history, which can be shared with all your providers everywhere, anytime.

This is why our product is named “My Health” in a language that was meant to break paradigms to allow human communication on a global scale.

Timothy Cook

President & CEO

I am a retired United States Marine Corps (USMC), awarded with a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for the development of several projects based on networking information systems. Upon retirement from the USMC I took employment in a distributed healthcare information environment and worked with biomedical device engineers to interface devices to the network and insure quality control and calibration of the devices.

Due to my passion for open source software development I decided to launch (in late 1997), what I thought would be a simple six month project to develop an open source practice management application. Little did I know this was the beginning of a fascinating journey into a new career of complex information challenges.

I then had an opportunity to take on formal education in the area to help solidify my understanding of the problems. After completing this educational phase, I dedicated my time to really solving the fundamental problem in health informatics.

I was a member of the openEHR Foundation Architecture Review Board for five years. I also founded and was the first Chair of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Open Source Working Group and I was a founding member of the international Open Source Health Care Alliance (OSHCA).

Extending my information gathering and maintaining contact with experts I had previously worked with; I hosted (for one year) a one on one interview web show of global celebrities in health informatics. Guests included; Dr. Ed Hammond, Dr. Ted Shortliffe, Dr. Patti Brennan, Dr. Martha Adams, Mr. Grahame Grieve, Dr. Dipak Kalra, Dr. Bill Hersch, among others. The archives are available on YouTube

My life goal is to bring Mian Sanon to every person in the world. Solving this fundamental problem in health informatics was my passion and now it is my passion to see people using it to live better.

Luciana Cavalini

SVP & Chief Medical Officer

I am a Physician and an Epidemiologist, born in Brazil. I have academic and practical experience in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Health Informatics. During my university career, I participated in several national and international research projects that dealt with major health information systems.

However, having worked in these projects, I became concerned about the fact that data quality is paramount, and data recorded in the healthcare systems we have now is far from good. So, I became interested in resolving the data quality problem at the point of care.

This became stronger to me when I went to work in the Emergency Room of the largest hospital in Latin America, being responsible for biosafety area and the reporting of epidemic diseases. Basically, patients were at risk of life because information about their cases were not circulating from the primary care units to the ER, and even internally in the hospital. This is the moment when I started to develop interest for clinical decision support systems.

In the second year of my PhD, I was approved by public contest to fill a tenured position at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Institute of Community Health at the Fluminense Federal University, located in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, I could design and execute several teaching, research and community service projects related to the use and development of health information systems in Public Health.

In 2007, I was awarded with a grant from the Brazilian Ministry of Education to stay at the Department of Social Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet, in Sweden, as a postdoctorate researcher. I worked there with my former PhD supervisor and his colleagues in projects related to use of Brazilian and Swedish health information systems to analyze health inequalities. Today I also work at the Department of Health Information Technologies at the Medical Sciences College at the Rio de Janeiro State University.

When I was in Sweden, I went to the Open Source Healthcare Alliance Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I met Tim Cook, our President and CEO. Back then, he was a member of the Architecture Review Board for the openEHR Foundation, and I was already working on a project to develop a decision support system for syndromic surveillance of acute jaundice-hemorrhagic fever. We decided to develop this project together using openEHR, and started our collaboration. Later, I invited him as a visiting technician in Sweden and later in Brazil as a visiting researcher, to leverage our projects in common. We are now working together to bring Mian Sanon to every person in the world.
